The guidance to work remotely was reintroduced on December 8th, so for nearly two months offices may have had greatly reduced occupancy or even been fully closed. In conditions like this, water system stagnation can occur, leading to the proliferation of legionella bacteria and increasing the risk of Legionnaires’ disease.
After the 2020 lockdown, the Chartered Institute for Environmental Health (CIEH) published new advice on legionella for business, saying it was vital that additional controls were put in place before any water systems were used again. These included flushing, raising the water temperature, microbiological sampling, and disinfection.
