Spotlight on Roisin Kearney – HR Business Partner
On International Women’s Day, we would like to introduce you to Team Rock member, Roisin!
Roisin says: “I’m very lucky to have been surrounded by inspirational women my entire life, but probably none more so than my Mum. It was she who inspired me to get into HR. She has had an amazing and varied career and has worked as a Senior HR Business Partner for a national organisation, a Global Head Of Learning and Development for a Top 5 Accountancy Firm and, most recently, a University Lecturer in Employment Relations and Human Resources Management.
I had decided to take a gap year between finishing sixth form and starting university to study English Literature and didn’t want to sit around the house all day. My Mum suggested looking at entry-level HR roles as I was (and still am) really interested in people.
I started my career in a large logistics company as a HR Administrator in December 2017. In December 2018 I was promoted to Junior People Services Advisor and put on an 18 month development programme to become a fully fledged advisor. I completed the programme in 6 months and was promoted to People Advisor, managing up to 60 cases at any given time – it was a bit of a baptism of fire!
In June 2021, I joined Rock as the HR Manager which gave me the opportunity to get involved in the more positive aspects of HR, managing and supporting with change programmes, developing policies and processes and looking at the best ways to support our people. In January 2023, I was promoted to HR Business Partner and now have a seat on the Senior Leadership Team.
I didn’t end up going to university to study English Literature, but I am now completing my Masters in Strategic Human Resource Management and Employee Relations, so it all worked out in the end!
Working in HR means that no two days are the same. One day I could be delivering training to our People Managers in one of our regional offices, the next I could be supporting with the harmonisation of terms and conditions across the business. I could be spending my day reviewing our company policies, procedures, and packages to ensure that they all align with the needs of the business and our people, or I could be answering questions from managers and colleagues alike regarding any people related queries they might have. Often, my day is a mixture of all of the above, so the one thing I can guarantee is that it is never boring or quiet!”
