Glasgow is a port city on the River Clyde, famous for its Victorian and art nouveau architecture, a rich legacy of the city’s 18th–20^th century prosperity from trade and shipbuilding. Today it’s a national cultural hub, home to institutions including the Scottish Opera, Scottish Ballet and National Theatre of Scotland.

There is so much to do in Glasgow that it’s hard to know where to start. Fabulous independent shops, great bars and restaurants, and iconic music venues like the Barrowland Ballroom, which over the years has hosted Oasis, Metallica and even David Bowie! King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut is smaller but equally famous, and where Radiohead played an early gig.

If you fancy doing something a bit different, how about the city centre mural trail – in 2022, Glasgow was named one of the best cities in the UK for street art. We particularly like the huge mural on Mitchell Street, created by artist Smug – it shows a girl with a magnifying glass; catch it at the right angle and it looks as if she’s examining people on the street!

We don’t know what they put in the water in Glasgow, but whatever it is, it seems to inspire greatness! Countless familiar names from film, music, design and sport come from Glasgow. James McAvoy, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Robert Carlyle, Kelly Macdonald, Andy Murray, Robbie Coltrane, Donovan, Kenny Dalglish and, of course, Billy Connolly are just some of the famous people born there.
